Match Report

Midwest Playoffs Recap

This weekend’s travel to Chicago for Midwest playoffs proved challenging for the Grand Rapids Gazelles rugby squad. Sad to say, both Grand Rapids Gazelles D4 and D3 teams lost in competitive play. The D4 team fell to St. Cloud Bottom Feeders in the Midwest Semi-Final match 12-46. The D3 team faced off against Bremer County Bucks, a group of highly-physical farm boys who were eager to make tackles and run crashes. The first 50 minutes of the D3 game were great, with the Gazelles edging out the opponent 19-10. However, the Gazelles came unglued with a few injury subs and some bad officiating late in the game. From that point on, the Bucks never let off the gas and the Gazelles lost 22-39. With 7’s season just around the corner, Grand Rapids Gazelles return home to lick their wounds and prepare for the summer! See picture for 7’s schedule.

D3 4/30-5/1 Recap

The Grand Rapids Gazelles hosted the first round of Midwest playoffs this weekend. D3 played on Saturday in the Greater Midwest Quarter-Final (Midwest East Conference Semi-Final) against the Cleveland Rovers.  Both team fought hard, but the Gazelles came out on top with a winning score of 35-0. Advancing to Sunday’s round, the D3 squad competed against Columbus Castaways in the Greater Midwest Semi-Final (Midwest East Conference Final).  The Gazelles defeated the Castaways 55-5. The D3 team will move on to face Bremer County (Iowa) Bucks next weekend at the Midwest Championship.

4/23 Recap

The weekend held a TON of rugby and an awesome opportunity to fight cancer. In partnership with Kirk Gates, we were able to raise $1,525 to contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Details on Kirk and his mission can be found at: We still have a few T-shirts left for sale, please contact us to purchase as we will continue to donate to Kirk’s cause with every shirt sold. Email us at On the rugby front – our Division 2 Women’s side crushed yet another team; this time it was Fort Wayne. In the girls’ first year, they have been dominating every club (and tied last year’s national runner-up) with only 13 players at each game… imagine what we could do with a full-side! Following the women’s match, our Division 3 Men’s side defeated Toledo 39 to 14. This was a massive win for our club, as it solidified our place as Top Seed in the Midwest region and secured home-field advantage as we head into Midwest Quarter-Finals. The Division 3 Midwest Championship games will be held at Highland Park Saturday 4/30 and Sunday 5/1. More information to come later this week.  The Grand Rapids Division 4 squad competed in the Midwest Quarter-Finals against Cleveland. After a grueling 80 minutes of highly-aggressive play, we fell to Cleveland and were knocked out of the national running. Great job to the D4 guys, that was a hard fought battle and we look forward to seeing you compete again in the Fall. The final match of the day was an alumni game that we hosted for Calvin College. Great to see the college guys (future Gazelles) showcasing their skills and athleticism.
